You can try to run, but you might want to think twice . . . the all-new 2014 Dodge Charger Pursuit is a force to be reckoned with. The new police vehicle has been designed with a main focus on being America's high-performance police vehicle for use year round and in all weather conditions. The Charger Pursuit, available in both V-6 and V-8 models, has been built on Dodge's rear-wheel drive legacy, but the V-8 has really upped the ante by achieving the fastest lap time ever recorded for an all-wheel drive test sedan - 1:33.85.
The testing took place earlier this week at Grattan Raceway in Belding, Michigan during Michigan State Police's annual Police Vehicle Evaluation. The Charger Pursuit beat the fastest average lap time (1:34.75) demonstrating its enormous capabilities in acceleration and handling.
"With the record-holding rear-wheel drive Dodge Charger Pursuit and now the fastest-ever recorded all-wheel drive model, Chrysler Group offers those who protect and serve us with the best pursuit-rated sedans in the business," said Peter Grady, Vice President of Network Development and Fleet, Chrysler Group LLC. "And with the only test cars achieving lap times less than 1:34, Dodge Charger Pursuit highlights the segment's best combination of world-class technology, acceleration, braking, handling and dynamics."
Last year, the all-time lap record, a 1:33.70 lap time, was achieved by the 2012 Dodge Charger Pursuit V-8 rear-wheel drive model, proving that the Charger Pursuit vehicles are the best in the nation.
The all-wheel drive 2014 Charger Pursuit V-8 comes packing with a 370-horsepower/390 lb-ft of torque 5.7L Hemi V-8 under the hood. The car is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 in less than six seconds, and achieves up to 25 miles per gallon when the car is in the four-cylinder Fuel Saver Technology mode. Perhaps one of the coolest features is the car's ability to seamlessly transition between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive without driver intervention, due to a segment-exclusive active transfer case and front-axle-disconnect system. When all-wheel performance isn't needed, the system disconnects the front axle on its own to increase fuel economy, and, in essence, turn itself into a rear-wheel drive vehicle without compromising any kind of performance.
The V-6 features a 3.6L Pentastar engine producing 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and comes complete with E85 flex fuel capability while achieving up to 27mpg (highway).
Many improvements have been made for the model year, as suggested by law enforcement officials. Among them was the need for increased braking abilities - amended by increasing the size of the front rotors from 13.6 to 14.5-inches, as well as all caliper swept areas. The V-8 portion of the fleet now possesses best-in-class stopping power of 60 to 0 in less than 127 feet. The lineup now features police-specific Secure Park, which means that the car cannot be driven unless the key fob is present in the vehicle, as well as ParkSense rear-park assist.
Other upgrades include a new and more durable fuel pump, a more efficient variable-displacement air conditioner compressor, and a new camber link change to the rear suspension to further enhance braking performance during high-speed and aggressive driving.
The interior houses a mobile-command center complete with Vehicle Systems Interface Module for easy equipment integration and heavy-duty front seats, along with column-mounted Auto Stick.
The fleet has also achieved status of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety "Top Safety Pick" due in large part to its uncompromising safety and security equipment, including standard advanced multi-stage airbags all around the interior compartment.
Cosmetically, changes include a revised rear fascia with robust exhaust tips and factory-installed Mopar vinyl graphics.
The 2014 Dodge Charger Pursuit all-wheel drive vehicles, manufactured at the Brampton, Ontario assembly place, will become available to law enforcement customers this coming spring through Chrysler Group's Fleet Operations. Learn more by visiting www.fleet.chrysler.com.
