The "Drag-on Lady" Shirley Shahan was the first woman to win an NHRA event. It was in 1965, when Shirley and her husband got their first Hemi. Shirley had wanted a stick shift, but the guys at Chrysler said she couldn't handle it. That seems strange, because she had never raced an automatic until this car came along. Even though she had never driven an automatic, she began winning Division 7 points meets and setting NHRA records.

Shirley raced Mopars full-time, from 1966 through 1968, but their long run with Mopar was about to end. In late 1968, the Shahans were approached by American Motors to run a 1969 AMX.
