Since we last left this ’70 ’Cuda barn find, Muscle Car Restorations has gotten busy prepping this ex-Canadian promo car for some new sheet metal. This is where the real work begins and as you’ll see, this project is not one for the inexperienced or the faint of heart.

You’ll remember that while there was some rust damage, most of the work will involve undoing all of the racing modifications which encompass nearly the entire back half of the car. Added to that, is the concern for whether or not the car might be twisted, out of square or otherwise deformed from hard track time.

Since so many parts of the car will have to be removed all at once, this is the sort of job that absolutely must be performed on a frame rack. Actually, MCR went even one step further than that and built support jigs around a known straight ’Cuda first. That way they could not only directly see how far this convertible was out of square, they also had known good reference points to bring it back to square if needed. Square tubing braces were built to secure the parts that were going to stay. It is absolutely essential that the good parts of the car don’t move while the new metal is installed.

You might ask, “Why remove everything at once? Why not just do one section at a time?” Since the framerails have to come out, it’s just easier to remove them with the floor and trunk. Also, once everything is out of the way, the AMD floor, trunk, and framerails can all go in at the same time. Also, since this thing doesn’t have a roof that otherwise would provide much of the necessary support, it needs to be heavily braced anyway.

One last hurdle is that the inner wheel wells, which were completely removed at one time to install the very big wheel tubs. The wheel tubs in a convertible are different different than those in a hardtop, to make room for the retracted top. Unfortunately, no one reproduces the convertible version. That forced MCR to locate part of a donor car with good inner wheel tubs.

This work is, of course, the foundation for the rest of the restoration. Our ex-racer now has factory correct sheetmetal from front to back. Next stop is body work and paint.
