The caliper mounting brackets... The caliper mounting brackets were installed with the tops pointed toward the front of the car. They are split into two pieces, permitting them to be mounted on the outside of the bearing retainer using the same retaining bolts. | With the caliper mounting... With the caliper mounting brackets secured, the splash shield and caliper mounting straps were next. The two caliper mounting straps are not the same length and need to be mounted pointing toward the rear of the car and each other. Here we installed the splash shield and caliper mounting straps using the four bolts and spacers supplied. | Next, we slid the rotor in... Next, we slid the rotor in place. |
Like the front, we assembled... Like the front, we assembled the caliper before installing it. Here, using the banjo bolts, the flexible brake line is bolted onto the caliper. Don't forget to use the copper washer between the hose fitting and the caliper to form a leakproof seal. | With the brake line coming... With the brake line coming off the wheel in a new location, the mount bracket on the axle housing no longer lined up. A trip to a local parts store and a little welding solved our problem. Here you can see the new location of the mounting clip with the brake line attached. | This disc brake kit is designed... This disc brake kit is designed for multiple applications. On Chargers, you need to mount the right side caliper on the left side of the car, and the left side caliper on the right side of the car, something not indicated on the instructions. This is necessary so the emergency brake cable will line up and work properly. Mounting the calipers like this will have no ill effect on the operation of the brakes. As you can see in this photo, we found out the hard way--by installing the calipers on the wrong side of the car. A quick phone call to Stainless Steel Brake's tech line and we were back in business. |
To complete the conversion... To complete the conversion we installed the parking brake L-bracket on the top front bolt that holds the caliper mounting. The parking brake cable was routed through the L-bracket and to the caliper. | | |
Rock And Roll No More
In addition to improving the stopping ability of the Charger, we decided to also improve on the handling with a set of Tokico Gas Shocks. Tokico designed their advanced gas shocks with a unique, angle-drilled piston and multi-stage, variable-aperture valve system that will reduce unwanted suspension roll and pitch. In this photo you can see the installed shock is ready for action.
