With the timing set off and the distributor's intermediate shaft removed, the camshaft retainer plate is unbolted and the cam withdrawn. It looks like the original cam was never changed. Here's what a worn-out cam looks like: The speckled dark spots on the lobes are where the surface of the cam has worn through the hardened layer, exposing the soft metal below.
