Taking a worn block at +.030 inch to +.040 inch means that the boring operation can't be done because there's not enough material for a bore-and-finish hone. This is where experience pays off. Jerry plays that Sunnen honing machine like a fiddle, pulling the taper out of the bore and having it come square just as the top of the cylinder reaches the .040 overbore size we're shooting for. Opening a cylinder with .008 inch of taper only .010 inch doesn't leave much material to play with, but Jerry pulled it off.
