It’s the start of 1971, and we are in the pits at Pomona on a cool February morning for the NHRA Winternationals with Tom McEwen’s Duster. The biggest sponsorship of the year (and in the sport ever, to that time) was spearheaded by Tom McEwen and his rival/friend Don Prudhomme in late 1969, who took their long-running Mongoose/Snake battle to the corporate bigwigs at the Mattel Toy Company. When the Hot Wheels brand agreed to back the two Californians, many others followed suit, including Plymouth and Coca-Cola, and the rest is history. The other image shows Prudhomme’s rig on a rainy day at a match race in either Canada or New England during the waning days of the 1970 season. Dig the ’bird in front of Prudhomme’s funny car, which was likely owned by a fan and being used as the day’s tow car.
