Legendary Hemi Dart racer Larry Griffith is a staple in Mopar racing history. He was the winner of three championships within Midwest United Drag Racers Association competition in the late-1960s. In 2009, forty years after Griffith dominated the racing circuit, he once again paired up with Dodge to take ownership of the second of the new Challenger Drag Pak racers – a tribute to his original race car. The first 2009 Challenger R/T Drag Pak was custom built for “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, however Griffith’s was actually the first off the assembly line.
The tribute to Griffith’s original 1968 Hemi Dart Racer (now belonging to former Chrysler Vice President of Global Service Joe Hilger) was custom painted by Nostalgia Lane to match the original. Inside of the trunk lid are Mopar racer autographs, adding to the unique and rare qualities of the car.
A 5.7L Hemi engine built by none other than Arrington Performance of Martinsville, Virginia, resides under-hood, and a heavy-duty automatic transmission along with Strange Engineering Dana rear end and Chassis Concept roll cage mean that the Challenger is prepped to race. The car originally came equipped with a 4-speed transmission, but it was swapped for use in competition. This Challenger is also the only known Drag Pak equipped with Holley Dominator fuel injection.
Driver Charlie Fitzsimmons piloted the car to victory at the 2013 NHRA Gatornationals, taking home Stock Eliminator honors and a highly-sought after Wally. The Wally, full documentation of production and build, and bill of sale are all included in the auction.
