This small selection of tools are what George uses for about 90 percent of his straightening. The black blob at the top of the group is a rubber-like substance used to back up the trim while it's being hammered on. It's from the medical field, but is very similar to artist's erasers (found at art supply stores), or Silly Putty. Modeling clay would also work.

This is a compound dent on a curved piece of trim. There are a lot of things going on with this dent; the crown is flattened going around the curve, the main character ridge is also flattened, the area where George is pointing has also been pushed up, much like the ridge around a crater.

The first thing to do is clean the work area. George uses an air tool to clean the front and back sides of the piece, followed up with a Scotch Brite pad to get any areas the wheel couldn't reach.

One thing George stresses is to work the area smooth with the tools, rather than push it past the original contours and then file off any high spots. This creates thin spots in the metal, which will heat quicker during the buffing process, easily ruining your piece.

Any high spots on the front from his repair would be tapped down, using putty to back up the blows. George didn't employ the putty while straightening this piece, but here he's showing how it conforms to the part and fits tight into the back of it.

After the trim is straight, it is sanded three times with a dual action sander, first with 280 grit, then 320 grit, and finally with 400 grit.

Then it's finished with a random orbital sander with 400 grit. George rests the trim on his legs for better control while he's grinding--that's why his Carharts need to be replaced so frequently.
