Any car that needs framerails will also have extensive rust damage elsewhere. This one needed a new rear tailpanel, so the decision was made to remove it along with the frame. You'll see why that was done as we get further into the project.

1969 Super Bee Framerail Replacement Secured Body
Before any cutting of sheetmetal or framerails can begin, you must make sure the body is securely fastened to a supporting system and perfectly level. You must ensure the remaining body retains its exact original shape. At MCR, a frame jig is available, but we know you probably won't have access to that kind of equipment. What you can do is make stands for square stock, much like the units that are part of the jig. If you can get a set of jackstands to perfectly level the car, that'll work too. Just put a small tack weld on the stand where it meets the car to ensure it doesn't move. Also mark the stand's location on the floor; that way if the stand gets moved somehow, you can put it back.

Another area you'll need to support is the tops of the quarters and the trunk lid opening. A simple support system can again be made using square stock. Once you're sure the car is sufficiently supported, you can start measuring.

When measuring for frame re-alignment, make sure to measure from points that are usable on both the old rails and the replacements. Again, MCR has a jig, but if you are doing this at home, a string and plumb bob can be used to mark for re-alignment. If using a plumb bob, hang the string from a location on the old rails that is perfectly repeatable when the new ones are in place. Simply hang the plumb bob, and then mark the location on the floor. Always remember to measure several times before cutting.

The front of the rear frame attaches to the inner rocker panel under the back-seat area. Both inner and outer rockers were replaced ahead of time so the new rails would have solid mounting points available to them. This is important because this is a key locating point for the entire frame assembly.

1969 Super Bee Framerail Replacement Trunk Floor
If rust has eaten up your frame, it's a good bet that the trunk floor and rear quarters will also be bad, so go ahead and remove them first. You don't need to be neat with the trunk floor. You're just getting it out of the way to make it easier to access the various spot welds and other attachment points, and to remove some weight from the assembly to make it easier to handle later since it will be done as one unit.

With the body properly supported, put a brace under each of the four corners of the frame and mark them so you have reference points for the new frame. Obviously, you can't weld these in place or you wouldn't be able to remove the frame. These will also support the rear of the car after the new frame is in place while you are finishing the rest of the repairs.

Measure, measure, and measure some more. Make measurements to the floor, from side-to-side, and in a crisscross pattern; carefully record them with drawings so you will be able to repeat them with the new frame.
