13 Place the differential in the housing, and loosely install the bearing caps so you can make side-load adjustments. You will need a magnetic base and a dial indicator for this next step. Stick the base to the housing, and set the “finger” of the dial gauge on any tooth face of the ring gear. One you are set, move the differential back and forth so that it rocks between two teeth on the pinion gear. This is your back lash. Adjust the side load adjusters to get the back lash to specification.
