Here’s the stock starter compared to the late-model Nippondenso starter.

The Nippondenso starter features an aluminum body that is narrower and shorter than the original, yet puts out more cranking power.

Its body also has holes drilled and tapped for a late model heat shield.

Here we have a high-torque race-style starter, which is smaller and lighter still than the high-torque production starter.

Note that the “cage” or snout at the back for the gear to engage has been eliminated. This is fine on a race application, but without a receptacle for the starter gear’s shaft to slide into while it’s being activated, the starter will eventually wear out, due to having no support at the back. It’ll live in a race car, but not with the repetition of starting a daily driven vehicle.

Here you can see how easily the late model starter from PA-Performance slipped into place through a set of Tube Technology’s headers.

The big draw here is that when it comes time to do any maintanance on the starter, the headers won’t have to be disconnected. The 5-pound weight savings doesn’t hurt either.
