What would our budget, factory smog 360 heads do with a little street porting? Mopar Muscle's Steve Dulcich broke out the grinders and fired up the flowbench to find out.

360 Engine Intake Heads 340X Head
How would we know if we were doing any good? We tested a stone stock 340X head, casting #2531894. These are widely regarded as the best production small block Mopar heads, earning their "X" nickname by the large X cast between the exhaust ports (arrow). The stock flow turned in was astounding-reaching a higher peak flow than the stock 440 heads tested last year on the same bench.

360 Engine Intake Heads Chamber
The chamber side view of a stock 360 head. The 360 heads carry a smaller 1.88-inch intake valve than the 340 head's 2.02-inch, but the same size 1.60-inch exhaust valve. The ports are remarkably similar. Stock flow was not too bad compared to stock Chevy heads on file, but not even close to the excellent 340 "X" heads. Notice how the straight side roof channel is dammed by the tail of the guide boss, where the boss hooks over into the flowpath (arrow A).

360 Engine Intake Heads Steel Valves
The seat angle can only be changed when increasing the valve size, and since we were moving up to a 2.02-inch valve, we had a perfect opportunity to do the job. Stock-type tuliped valves (left) have the valve face flare up to the stem at too steep of an angle to take a 30-degree face. The flat-headed Milodon intake valves we used (right) can be faced with the shallower 30-degree angle.
