Boring brings the block close to the final dimension, while honing finishes up the final size and provides the final surface finish and crosshatch pattern. A torque plate, as shown bolted to the top of this big-block, will compensate for the cylinder-wall distortion caused when the head is bolted on, making for as round a bore as practical when the engine is assembled.
