Thinner-section rings and back-cuts reduce the wall tension, and are typically used in conjunction with pistons having gas ports. Traditional vertical gas ports are drilled at the piston top, going straight down to intersect the back of the top ring groove. Gas pressure behind the ring loads it to the cylinder wall. The ring loads vary with cylinder gas pressure, adding tension when it is most needed. View Related Article
