With the help of Comp’s staff and facility, as well as Tom and Brenda Foley from T&B’z Race Engines, we all stayed late Wednesday night to help the LaRoys repair their damaged big-block. Making what can be called a “field repair” by knurling the outside diameter of the valve guides and then using a reamer and ball-hone to re-size the inside diameter, the guides were re-fitted and usable. Without the time or quick access to a valve machine, the valves were hand-lapped with compound so the heads could be reassembled. We even found head gaskets in stock at a local Auto Zone, though we drove through scenes from “Memphis, The First 48” to get them. View Related Article
