Edelbrock AVS Carburetors - Edelbrock's Thunder Series AVS

If replacing a factory AVS or an AFB-style carb, the Edelbrock AVS is a direct replacement, requiring little if any rerouting of lines or linkages. Just four bolts and it's home.

To mate with a vintage Mopar's throttle linkage and/or kickdown, a Mopar Throttle Lever Kit is required, Edelbrock PN 1481. The kit bolts onto the existing carb linkage and accepts the stock Mopar throttle-linkage stud.

One glitch is the throttle plates interfere with the wide plenum divider on our Performer RPM Air-Gap intake when the throttle is opened. By replacing the furnished thin gasket with a thick insulating gasket, the throttle plates are raised enough to provide ample clearance. An insulating gasket is a helpful upgrade.

Curb idle speed is set with the engine warm and is adjusted by this single screw on the throttle-linkage side of the carb.

The air door is preset at the most commonly required setting. Fine-tuning is done by holding the adjuster with a blade-type screwdriver while slacking off the locknut. Turn the adjuster counterclockwise to make the air valve open slower, or clockwise for quicker opening. The factory setting is 1 1⁄2 turns counterclockwise from just closed; Edelbrock does not recommend straying more than one turn from the factory setting.

The AVS exhibits no shortage of response.

We found a 5⁄16-inch steel hard line from our local NAPA dealer and bent a new line from the fuel pump to the carb. Be sure to include a new fuel filter.

Once hooked up, the AVS-equipped 340 fires and runs with no unexpected problems. Basic tuning involves setting the idle mixture and speed. The carb is bench-set with the mixture screws in a ballpark range. To fine tune it, adjust the screws evenly inward until a slight drop in rpm is experienced. Or, if you have a vacuum gauge, set the screws to the highest setting.
