Kevin Willis of Automotive Performance Engines bored and honed our block for the proper piston-to-wall clearance. Notice the torque plate on top of the cylinders. We recommend a torque plate be used anytime you have a performance-oriented block bored and honed.

With our parts back from the machine shop, we clearanced the block for our 4.150-inch crank and Eagle H-beam connecting rods with a carbide bit and die grinder. Usually grinding about 11/48-inch from the bottom of the outer cylinder wall is enough, but you'll need to mock up the crank and rod to be sure you have a minimum of .080-inch clearance. The oil pickup tube boss is clearanced the same way.

With our block clearanced and cleaned, we taped it off to be painted. Utilizing an old oil pan, distributor, and set of cylinder heads to cover areas that aren't to be painted definitely saves time during this step.
